Chapter 1: Starting Out

Introduction

The essential tools for online teachingĀ are simple: Computer, microphone and web camera. Additional extras include a headset or headphones. On most modern computers, the web camera is built in and the internal microphone is of a very high standard. However, you can also purchase a USB web camera and microphone relatively cheaply should you need to. Personally speaking, I use my internal microphone and headphones. Many teachers, however, do prefer to use a headset (microphone and headphones together). My advice is to buy high quality devices, as the sound of your voice is a vital part to successful language training. Let’s now consider the best platforms for teaching online.
